Hue Jackson Hired as Raiders Offensive Coordinator: Per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports

Jay Glazer has just tweeted that, although there is still no "Official decision" on Coach Tom Cable, that the Raiders have hired former Baltimore Ravens' QB Coach Hue Jackson as Offensive Coordinator.

Hue Jackson had been reportedly en route to Chicago to interview for the same position with the Bears.

It is likely that that news may have helped to facilitate this decision.

Jackson has previously worked with Tom Cable at the University of California in 1996.  He has previously held Offensive Assistant positions with the Bengals, Falcons and Ravens.

This is good news for JaMarcus Russell and for Tom Cable.

"raiders say no dec yet on Cable, but they appear to be building a staff 4 him. i'm reporting they have hired hue jackson as off coordinator"

Is Tom Cable Re-Building His Coaching Staff?: Maybe the Oakland Raiders already have a Head Coach

In a few small, but important,  pieces of news about the Oakland Raiders alleged quest to fill the most high-profile, temp job in sports history, we may finally have a clue as to the direction of this organization.

Amid the backdrop of last week's Dead Man Walking mood around Raider Nation and Tom Cable, came a relative flurry of news about coaching interviews that have taken place in Oakland....Even though the Raiders Head Coaching job is, technically, already filled.

Raiders Head Coaching Rumors:

David White of the local San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Raiders interviewed Jim Fassell (of the UFL Champion Las Vegas Locomotives) and Marc Trestman (of the CFL champion Montreal Allouettes) for the Head Coaching position, as far back as 2 weeks ago.

Jim Fassell has previously coached the New York Giants, and Marc Trestman was the Offensive Coordinator in Oakland.  Both have previously interviewed with Al Davis...which is not to be lost, or overblown, because of the fact that Al Davis like to interview people, and both of those coaches are recent champions.

UPDATE: Marc Trestman has not yet confimred, nor denied, the report.  But, Jim Fassell was adamant that he has not interviewed, and would never, attempt to poach a filled coaching position, because "He is in the same fraternity," as Tom Cable.

Asst. Coach/Coordinator Rumors:

In addition to David White's report, Jason LaCanfora, of the NFL Network, also reported that the New York Giants permitted their defensive line coach, Mike Waufle to interview in Oakland.  Waufle is highly respected and has produced significant 4 man pressure schemes in New York, without having to resort to the blitz.   But not only that, he was also the D Line Coach for the Oakland Raiders during the Jon Gruden era.

But in addition to the relatively fresh news about Waufle, and in an unusual amount of information for the Raiders in one day: KFFL.com also posted this to their website:

Raiders | Receive permission to interview H. Jackson

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Oakland Raiders have received permission to interview Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson for an unspecified position.

Not surprisingly, the news only escaped the waterproof Raiders organization about Waufle and Jackson because both assistant coaches interviewed are on staff, and under contract, with other teams, and are required to seek and be granted permission by their respective employers in order to interview for a different team.

It is not obviously clear for what position each coach was actually interviewing for.  But, typically, teams grant permission to contracted coaches to interview elsewhere, only when the coach in question is interviewing for a job that would represent a promotion over their current position.

It is a nicety from franchises to their employees, and the engine by how the league progresses.

None of the names connected to the Raiders would be considered obvious heirs to an NFL head coaching position...even for the Raiders, which is apparently the least desirable job in sports (per the Buffallo Bills new GM, Buddy Nix).

But the following is something to consider:

Tom Cable coached at Cal from 1992-1997.

Mike Waufle also coached at Cal....from 1992-1997.

Hue Jackson also coached at Cal, for 1 year in 1996, where he was an OC, before going to USC to hold the same position in 1997.

Tom Cable, Mike Waufle and Hue Jackson have all previously worked together, in the Bay Area, throughout their most formative early coaching careers.

As with everything with the Oakland Raiders, this is all conjecture, but the dots connected by the news yesterday, has led me to believe that Tom Cable will remain the Oakland Raiders Head Coach.

Rob Ryan Wants to be the Raiders Head Coach: ...

A final note about Hue Jackson snuck into the end of the column:

I think a Black coach or mentor is absolutely crucial for JaMarcus Russell.  I truly believe that this would be a brilliant hire:

First of all he helped developed Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmanzadeh into premier receivers, which they were not in college.

Second of all, he survived the Mike Vick chaos in Atlanta in 2007, and developed Joe Flacco in 2008 and 2009.

Third of all, JaMarcus Russell needs a friend.  I'm not sure if Rich Gannon or Marc Trestman or, Kevin Gilbride, or even Jon Gruden is capable of being able to truly reach him.

Rob Ryan with the man who stole what should've been his job

Rob Ryan Wants to be the Raiders Head Coach: But for Art Shell and Lane Kiffin, he would be.

Oakland Sports News/Coach Watch 2010-Rob Ryan

The USA Today is reporting that former Raiders Defensive Coordinator, Rob Ryan, enthusiastically affirmed that he would be interested in the Raiders Head Coaching position.

It was all in conjecture, and Ryan insisted he has not had any contact with the Raiders, but he did not hold back his typical flamboyant enthusiasm when asked about the prospect:  "Hell Yeah, I'd be interested!"

Rob Ryan interviewed for the Head Coaching position 4 years ago, post Art Shell and the Horrific 2006 season, where the Raiders allowed over 70 sacks.  The humiliation of the Raider's High School offense that season conspired against the Defensive Coordinator, when Al Davis committed to hiring an offensive play calling Head Coach.

Lane "Lucky Lance" Kiffin was awarded the Head Coaching position instead, which he held against Rob Ryan, since Kiffin was forced to adopt him on to his first staff.  A reality that proceded to alienate Rob Ryan away to Cleveland.

In fact much of the "insubordination" claims that Al Davis made during his infamous "for cause" press briefing when he fired Lane Kiffin, initiated over Lane's public assertions that Ryan and Davis prepared the Defensive gameplan without Kiffin's involvement.

Ryan claimed significant points with the bossman when he jumped on the grenade, by swearing that his defensive gameplans (which were being criticized for being vanilla) were his own, and not dictated by Al Davis.

Ryan left for Cleveland when Tom Cable, also an alleged offensive play calling coach, was retained during the 2009 offseason.

Rob Ryan was a favorite of the Raider Nation fanbase, mostly because of his persona and image as a foul mouthed, but jovial, long haired misfit.  He fit within the "Mystique."

By all accounts, it was an amicable split, where both sides agreed that it was best for all.  Including a little flattery towards Mr. Davis, and JaMarcus Russell, during the week leading up the Browns decisive defeat over the Raiders late in the season.

And although the team was also as bad as it currently is during much of his tenure, the Raiders Defense has been given somewhat of a pass for the difficult situations that the Oakland Offense continues to put it in.  Game after game, year after year.

Rex Ryan, Rob's Brother, in his first year as a head coach of the NY Jets, has become a media darling, based on many of the mannerisms that endeared Rob to Oakland Fans.

Rex Ryan is leading the Jets into the 2nd round of the playoffs this week, on the backs of the #1 running game and  the #1 overall defense, but more impressively, he is doing so despite a lack of consistent talent at the WR position, and a rookie QB with a 53% completion rate and 20 INTs.....

Rex Ryan accomplished more with his team than he should have.  On the eve of the Jets 2nd playoff game, that is undeniable.

And he did it by playing to his team's strenths.

If there is a glaring flaw in Tom Cable's coaching, it is that he did not force the rushing game this year.  To me it screamed to a lack of common sense.

Maybe we shouldn't dismiss brother Rob's bravado when he says:  "There are a lot of good Coaches out there, but there are only so many Ryans."

As of Friday morning, 2 meetings with Tom Cable, scheduled by Al Davis to discuss the Coach's future with the organization, have not appeared to have taken place.
